The Politics of Common Sense

U.S. Immigration Must be Fixed to Preserve the Union

The illegal immigration problem in America is not about crime or racism, it is a breach of fairness, like slavery that is not indefinitely sustainable. By not addressing undocumented immigration the two major parties have conspired, either by choice or voluntary negligence, to endanger our national security and to create a two-tiered economic American Apartheid, where an underclass is exploited for the benefit of others, who are usually special interests taking most of those benefits. A coherent immigration policy with effective management and operational control can benefit our economy and society.

1)The Causes:

It is hard to distinguish between political refugees, refugees seeking a more economically prosperous life, and those just fleeing lawless violence.

-Economic Incentives would be much less if we did not allow the employment of undocumented workers for our lowest paid, dirtiest and most dangerous jobs.

-Gun Violence is propagated and perpetuated in Central America by the international gun industry.  What we have created is a kind of International Second Amendment that allows large sections of society to be brutalized. Look at Haiti. It’s an island. Do not tell me that the international community cannot limit the influx of arms. Take away the guns from the gangs and more than half of the problem is solved.

The toleration of the immigration Caravans- Do not tell me that we cannot figure out who paid for the radio advertisements that organized the Caravans. They are not exposed because the powers at the top on both sides are content with or are complicit in the status quo.

2) Real Americans don’t like Unfairness and Inequality

The current system is not fair. It encourages people to rush the line while people who play by the rules get shut out.

Birth Tourism – is not fair. It allows the wealthy and elite to buy their way in at the expense of the more deserving.

Birthright Citizenship should have some limitation to avoid abuse.

51b abuse – having a 2-tiered system of paying people in the workplace is not fair and it lowers the wages of all American works and takes away their bargaining power.

3) What didn’t work:

Amnesty under Reagan – no workplace enforcement

DACA under Obama – no workplace enforcement, never approved by Congress

The Wall, you can’t fence people out as long as the economic incentives draw them to American jobs. Visa Overstays are a huge percentage of undocumented people in addition to those who cross the border illegally. A walled fortress country is not practical. Business employment regulation IS practical.

4) The solutions:

You can’t forcibly move millions of people, but you can recognize them and offer pathways to citizenship over a long transition period.

The most important tool we have to reverse economic incentives is Work Place Enforcement– echeck m- biometric. We have the technology; we just need the will to endure the higher price to live in a fair society. Just like any disruption, prices will go up but so will wages and we become a more equal society.

Regulate Birthright Citizenship – end birth tourism.

Now is the time to get a fair working system in place, because climate change will only exacerbate the dislocation caused by economic opportunity and gang gun violence.
